The New Fairy Tales - Beauty & Beast

Copyright © 2010 of James Pettis, III

Beauty & Beast is the fourth fairy tale in The New Fairy Tales Series. It is based on Beauty and the Beast by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740.

In a kingdom far away, a spoiled, rich, selfish, and handsome prince named Alexander lives with his servants in a large castle. One night, when an elderly woman comes to his castle and offers him a red rose for shelter, he shuns her away in disgust. She reveals herself as a beautiful angel known as the Angel of Hope that was sent to test him. For his punishment for his evil and selfish ways, he is turned into a Beast and ripped of his wealth until he can find someone to love him and he learns how to love. Then, an elderly man stumbles upon the castle and begins to "make himself at home" without the Beast's (Alexander) permission. The Beast threatens to kill the man, but the man pleas that he meant no harm and will do anything if he won't kill him. The Beast forces the man to send his youngest daughter to the kingdom to live with him forever. The man sends his youngest daughter to the castle and leaves her, never to see her again. As she stays in the castle with the Beast they begin to form a bond, but will it be too late to save him?

This was another one of my most fairy tales when I was younger. I have had fun coming up with the idea and will enjoy writing it. Stay posted for more info about Beauty & Beast.

The New Fairy Tales - Rumpelstiltskin

Rumpelstiltskin is the seventh fairy tale in The New Fairy Tales Series. It is based Rumpelstiltskin by Brothers Grimm in 1812. It is about Rumpelstiltskin and how he helps a young woman spin straw to win the kings heart, but later he tries to take her child as debt to pay.

This story never received a plot due to this series' revision, The New Fairy Tales. Hansel and Gretel has taken it's place.

The New Fairy Tales - Peter Pan

Peter Pan is the ninth fairy tale in The New Fairy Tales Series. It is based on Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie in 1909. Peter Pan is modernized for the current generation, but stays faithful to the original storyline.

Wendy Darling is a seventeen year old girl who will be leaving to go to college in the next week but she doesn't want to. She doesn't want to leave her little brothers John and Michael and her parents. But one night, a young man appears outside her window and takes Wendy and her little brothers to a place were no one grows old... Neverland. The young man reveals himself as Peter Pan and he begins to fall in love with Wendy (and she falls for him). But when an evil pirate named Captain Hook threatens to capture and kill Wendy, Peter must use his resources and stop Captain Hook.

This was cool coming up with this idea and I think I'll enjoy writing it. Stay tuned to more info about Peter Pan.

The New Fairy Tales - Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp

Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp is the eighth story in The New Fairy Tales Series. It is based on the fairy tale Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp from 1001 Arabian Nights (author unknown). Aladdin has always been one of my favorite fairy tales.

Aladdin is a Arab young man who lives in a Chinese city. Aladdin has always gotten into trouble and is known best for his devious acts. But Aladdin is tired of his ways and wants to make a change. That change comes when he meets a "wise man" (Kadar, an evil Sorcerer) who leads him to the Mystical Cave of Magic. Once there, Aladdin retrieves a magic ring and the magical lamp. The "wise man" (Kadar) tries to kill Aladdin but instead ends up trapping him under ground. But with the power of the ring and the magical lamp, Aladdin releases two powerful Djinni that help him escape and begin with the wish making. Kadar becomes furious and will stop at nothing to kill Aladdin and retrieve the Djinni. It is up to Aladdin to stop Kadar before it's too late.

Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp has always been a childhood favorite of mine and I am excited to work on this fairy tale. Stay posted for info and short stories about Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.

The New Fairy Tales - Sleeping Beauty

Copyright © 2010 of James Pettis, III

Sleeping Beauty is the fifth story in The New Fairy Tales Series. It is taken from and based on the original fairy tale Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault in 1697. Sleeping Beauty is another fairy tale that I've always loved which is way I wanted to remake it.

In a kingdom far away, a Queen wants nothing more than to have a child to call her own. She prays everyday to have a child to call her own. Then she gives birth to a beautiful baby girl who she calls Rose. The kingdom has a celebration in honor of the child and have fairies come and bless the child. But one fairy wasn't invited and she crashes the celebration and curses the princess. The curse is that when the princess turns sixteen she will prick her finger on a spindle of a spinning and die. The King then creates a new law where all spindles are banished from the kingdom and if anyone is caught using one, the will be sentenced to death. Once Rose is sixteen, her mother and father leave the kingdom to find new materials and find ways to make clothes, leaving the young princess alone in the kingdom. This gives the evil fairy a chance to make her move, but a Prince visiting the kingdom will stop at nothing to protect the princess from evil. But will he save her before it's too late?

This has been fun coming up with the plot and storyline. I love it and I will really enjoy writing it. Stay posted for more info about Sleeping Beauty.

The New Fairy Tales - Cinderella

Cinderella is the second story in The New Fairy Tales Series. It is taken from and based on the original fairy tale Cinderella by Charles Perrault in 1697. Cinderella has always been one of my favorite fairy tales and that's one of the reasons I wanted to do it in this series.

Ella is a girl who lived with her mother and father in their lovely mansion. Ella's mother gets sick and passes away leaving her daughter and husband lonely. But Ella's father remarries to a woman named Percilla who has to beautiful daughters named Eldria and Carmen. Soon Ella's father dies leaving her to live with her now evil step-mother and step-sisters. As Ella grows older, she is called Cinderella (because she sits be the fire place and is always covered in ashes), and has grown into a beautiful young woman. Then, a Masquerade Ball is announced to the town that is being thrown by the Prince (an African-American) to find himself a wife. Cinderella is not allowed to go to the ball and is left alone at the house; but Cinderella's Fairy God Mother comes to help her so she too can go to the ball. Cinderella meets the prince and falls in love with him but can't reveal herself to him. After the Ball, the Prince searches for the "Mysterious Woman" in the town with her diamond slipper she left behind. Will the Prince find her or will the step-mother do the unthinkable to prevent their union?

My version of Cinderella has violence in it that isn't seen in other adaptions of Cinderella. The reason I also pointed out the prince is African-American is because Cinderella and her family are Caucasian (and so are most of the other minor characters), I wanted to show a diverse cast in my fairy tales. I have enjoy coming up with different ideas for Cinderella and I hope others will enjoy it aswell. Stay posted for more info about Cinderella.
